Over the past six years, Mr. Schlecht has been teaching freshman theology at Lutheran High School. He found his way teaching here at LuHi because he got a call during his senior year of college at Concordia University Wisconsin saying “We’d love to have you teach here.” Mr. Schlecht states, “I love that I get to teach students, and tell students, and remind students everyday that they are loved by the God of the universe and that Jesus died for them and rose again so that they could live with him forever.”
His job along with other theology teachers is outstanding because he has profound impact on students’ lives that they will continue to remember throughout the rest of their lives and apply their knowledge from this class in everything they do. He is able to teach students who God truly is, and he says “I hope they know that they are loved by God and that Jesus died for them” and “I want them to love the Bible and I want them to love God’s word and want to learn more about God.” Because of his immense care and diligence when teaching his students, Mr. Schlecht can be credited as one of the few people who teach with a bigger purpose in mind.
This past year he has recently become a dad to his wonderful daughter Emerson. He beams as he says “I didn’t know I could love a little thing so much.” He has formed such a close bond with his new daughter that can never be broken and has learned so much from becoming a dad. Mr. Schlecht says “It’s helped me see the perspective of God better too, the way that he loves us and the fact that he would give up his one and only son for us, because I wouldn’t give up Emerson for anything.”
When asked about their favorite parts of Mr. Schlecht’s class and teaching style, one student, sophomore Emery Gaasch, stated “[I liked] the way he taught and his fun activities for each lesson.” One thing that makes Mr. Schlecht so amazing is that he is able to get most students to engage in the content he is teaching by making the class memorable and easy to understand. He represents the Truth with enthusiasm and character, allowing it to engrave in his students’ minds. Mr. Schlecht expresses “I love the energy that freshmen bring to the classroom, they are still excited to learn and to be there.”
Overall, Mr. Schlecht is someone who has impacted many students’ lives for the better and will continue to impact so many more lives while he is at Lutheran High School and wherever his future takes him. He will also continue to impact his wife and daughter in glorious ways and share the good news of the Gospel with anyone he encounters in his life. “I try to love my students as Jesus loves me so that maybe they can experience Jesus through me,” he stated, tying a ribbon around his motivation in teaching.
