Schools all over the nation take time off every January to take a pause and honor Martin Luther King Jr. and everything he has done for our country.
Martin Luther King Jr. has left an incredible legacy through his consistent pursuit of racial equality and social resistance through his nonviolent ways. During the time off of schools, we are able to reflect upon King’s achievements and the ongoing struggles of equality. It’s an opportunity for everyone to learn about MLK’s role in advancing civil rights through events like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, his I Have a Dream speech and so much more. On all of these famous events, King taught on the importance of equality for everyone, disregarding how they look. He, along with many others, died to support giving everyone an opportunity to make their own opinions of other people. By dedicating a day to MLK’s memory, schools are able to remind students to continue judging everyone by their character, not by the color of their skin. This holiday is more than just a break from school, it’s a time for people to reflect and continue Martin Luther King’s work towards a better future. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” (MLK).
