January is one of the coldest months of the year in Colorado. The weather doesn’t stop the LuHi community from having a fun time, however. The students embrace the winter with activities such as skiing, ice-skating, sledding, ice fishing or even indoor activities such as reading indoors, sitting by the fire and having a hot chocolate, or board games with your friends and family; there are numerous activities that you can experience during the cold winter. These winter activities have become traditions for the students in the month of January.
Although there are a variety of activities for the students, the most popular winter activity is skiing. It is a very fun sport where many different students travel up to beautiful places such as Keystone, Vail, Aspen or Beaver Creek. The students get to be with their friends and family and enjoy a relaxing vacation up in the gorgeous mountains. Skiing has a big impact on most students in the Lutheran community. Sophomore Brooke Vierling shared, “I like skiing, outside and it’s a different sport, fresh snow and being free from city life and it’s another fun activity you can do in the snow to enjoy the outdoors.” Skiing is a great way to spend more time with family and create more memories with the people you love. Junior Tori Dewitt said, “I love skiing, I get to spend time with my friends and family and be in the mountains.” Sophomore Addison Gauthreaux said, “I like skiing, I find it exhilarating.” Many students love the many joys that come from skiing, especially getting the opportunity to spend valuable time with their friends and family. Skiing is a good way to take advantage of the cold weather and snow instead of complaining about it.
Beyond skiing, students like to balance their outdoor activities with indoor sports. For example, many students participate in sports in the winter such as basketball, swimming, running and wrestling. Other students enjoy watching the games, Mia Schauer, a senior at LuHi, stated that she loves “pack the den, I get to support the team but also get rowdy, LuHi sports and I love basketball.” There are many different opportunities for the students to fill their winter with fun activities. They will continue to do these activities throughout February and March as the weather is still snowing and cold. Whether on the ski slopes or on the basketball courts, the LuHi students know how to make the most of their cold winter months.
