Winter is often known as the ‘dullest time of the year’. The second semester of the school year is mostly consumed by wintertime, especially in Colorado. Feeling glum and down during the winter time is something that many of us are accustomed to for many different reasons. Such as the lack of sunlight, the cold weather, or even the scarcity of major events or holidays.
When asked about this, sophomore Isaac Steers explains, “It makes me feel sad because we have no days off.”
But what about winter makes it so boring? Well, once the holiday season passes, students don’t have much to look forward to. The next major holiday is Easter and that isn’t upon us until April, as well as the next major break which isn’t until the middle of March. Students have also expressed an increase in tiredness, which may be due to the fact that there is less daylight during these months. Tired students often experience a lack of motivation, therefore making it harder to focus, complete assignments, and study for tests.
In this lack of focus and motivation, students may find themselves overwhelmed, stressed, and even depressed. All rooting from the main cause of winter.
But what are some ways we can overcome these struggles? Well, you can start by preparing with little things that make you excited and happy to start your day, even if it may look gloomy outside. Things such as music, a hot drink, comfy clothing etc. You can also find friends and family members to talk to about your struggles and to brighten your mood. Lastly, appreciate the little moments in life like finishing an assignment you’ve been meaning to get done or having a really yummy lunch waiting for you.
