Everyone has their favorite Christmas traditions to celebrate the holidays and create fun memories. Many families have a tradition surrounding watching Christmas movies during the holiday season. The Luhi Roar took a survey of students to see which spirit-filled films make their roster every year. Elf overwhelmingly took the top spot with 52 votes. Christmas Vacation and Home Alone were very close for 2nd and 3rd place.
Abigail Mills, a freshman, says her favorite Christmas movie is “Christmas Vacation” which got 15 votes in the overall survey. Her favorite quote from the movie is “Since you’re not doing anything constructive, run into the living room and get me my stogie.” Abigail’s family does not restrict the holiday film to just the Christmas season. She says, “I watch it whenever I want to with my dad”. What a great way to bond with family over fond memories in the making.
Presley Baker, a sophomore, says her favorite Christmas movie is “Home Alone”. Home Alone as a whole got 14 votes, but only half of those are specific to the first version. She watches it all year round with her family. One of the scenes she enjoys most is when Kevin blesses his “homemade meal” and says, “Bless this highly nutritious microwave macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen.” The movie is a staple in the Baker family home especially during the holiday season. Presley says, “I watch Home Alone with my family or by myself at least 3-4 times in December. It is a classic for us.” Home Alone is a funny movie that most people love to watch during the holidays, or all year round, with family and friends to make the time of year even more classic.
Senior Megan Kreinor, watches her favorite Christmas movie, “White Christmas”, every year on Christmas Eve. She says her favorite part of the movie is when Phil Davis says to Bob, “My dear partner, when what’s left of you gets around to what’s left to be gotten, what’s left to be gotten won’t be worth getting, whatever it is you’ve got left.” This is a very poetic and also confusing bit of the movie but nonetheless Megan enjoys this scene as well as the rest of her family. And even though the movie only made up 4% of the total tally, it is a classic that deserves a watch from every family around the holidays.
Having traditions that include older pieces, such as watching an older movie, can create a familiar sense of comfort annually when the Christmas season rolls around once again. Almost every family has a film they love to watch time of year. Some are newer than others but all serve the purpose of creating a haven for relationships within a family. No matter how common your favorite Christmas movie is, there is no doubt that it will lift your spirit and get you into the holiday mood when you watch it.
