As the track season approaches, there is anticipation building among the athletes. For many LuHi runners, the season is not only about competition, but also forming a community with their teammates.
One of the most exciting parts of the upcoming season is getting the opportunity to get faster and stronger with close friends. Gwyn Nelson shared that she is excited to “be able to spend time with teammates and hopefully getting some medals in races.” Track is typically seen as an individual sport, but with the encouragement from teammates, it builds motivation and strengthens performance.
While teammates play a big role in motivation, long term goals play are even more important. “What motivates me is to hopefully be able to run in state and eventually go to college for running,” Nelson said. Each practice and meet is a step closer to bigger dreams, whether that is qualifying for state, or pursuing a career out of high school. This also creates high expectations for individual athletes, parents, and coaches.
As excitement for the season is growing, there are some nerves that come along with that. With cold weather, trying to beat old times, or even recovering from previous injuries, track season can be tough, but balancing nerves with excitement is something that many athletes experience. However, friends, family, and a good running environment helps immensely with the pre-season jitters.
Each season, more and more people are joining track, meaning there are going to be a lot of newer runners. This creates an even bigger running community, making it more fun and easier to find friends to run with! For athletes considering joining for the first time, advice from experienced track runners can make all the difference. “My advice for new people is to make as many friends as you can and to start training early before the season starts to be able to have a smooth transition into the season,” Nelson shared. Track is not only a great way to stay active, but it is also a great way to meet new people.
Overall, with strong goals, supportive teammates, and a fresh start, this upcoming track season is shaping up to be filled with hard work and memorable moments.
